Education Ministry Moves to Curb Night-Time School Bus Trips.
Basic Education Director General Dr. Elyas Abdi has issued a stern warning to principals found operating school buses beyond the permitted hours.
Dr. Elyas Abdi noted that cases of school buses transporting students and even members of the public at night were becoming frequent, which is contrary to ministry regulations. He made it clear that such actions would not be tolerated and that appropriate measures would be taken against violators.
“We have seen cases where students and even members of the public are ferried at night which is against the law and we shall take action,” Abdi said.
In an effort to enhance student safety, the previous administration instituted strict rules on school bus operations. This decision was made at different times under the direction of the former Cabinet Secretaries for Interior and Education.
Travel Ban Between 10pm and 5am
Following a series of tragic accidents involving school buses, Fred Matiang’i and George Magoha issued a directive prohibiting school transport from operating past 10pm.
They emphasized that travel during these late hours posed a significant danger to students. As a result, government regulations now bar school buses from being on the road between 10pm and 5am.

In line with the travel restrictions, all school buses are required to have enough seats fitted with working seat belts for each child.
Furthermore, the law strictly forbids school vans and buses that are deemed unroadworthy from operating on public roads. These measures were put in place to prevent avoidable accidents and ensure the well-being of students during school-related travel.
