The Ministry of Education (MoE) is in the process of developing a framework to formally acknowledge and define the role of alumni associations in educational institutions. This move aims to standardize their contribution to the education sector.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba highlighted this initiative during the inaugural Wajir High School Alumni meeting at the Bomas of Kenya, Nairobi.

He was accompanied by Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi.

Ogamba praised the alumni for establishing their association to support their alma mater through resource mobilization and mentoring students and teachers.

The Role of Alumni in Education

Alumni are considered an institution’s most steadfast supporters and key fundraising contributors. However, legal recognition of alumni associations has so far been limited to public and private universities under the Universities Act, 2012.

This Act provides that a university may establish an alumni association consisting of graduates and other persons declared members under its charter.

Last year, two university graduates petitioned the National Assembly to amend the Basic Education Act.

They proposed the inclusion of provisions for the registration, regulation, and recognition of alumni associations for basic education institutions, such as ECDEs, primary, and secondary schools. If approved, this petition would extend legal acknowledgment to these associations.

Leaders Grace the Event

The Wajir High School Alumni meeting also drew notable leaders, including Wajir County Governor and Council of Governors Chairperson Ahmed Abdullahi, Wajir Senator Mohamed Abbas Sheikh, Wajir East MP Mohamed Aden Daud, and Wajir West MP Farah Yusuf Mohamed. Their presence underscored the significance of alumni associations in advancing education at all levels.
