Education Ministry Cancels KCSE Results for 840 Candidates.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has confirmed that the results of 840 candidates from the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations have been annulled due to irregularities during the exams.

In a statement made during the release of the exam results, Ogamba disclosed that the results of an additional 2,829 candidates have been withheld while investigations continue. The investigations, which began on January 9, 2025, are expected to be completed within 30 days.

Concerns Over Teacher Involvement in Malpractices

Ogamba expressed regret that despite efforts to curb exam malpractices, some teachers and contracted professionals continue to facilitate cheating.

He criticized the actions of a few individuals who, in their pursuit of personal gain, jeopardize the future of students by promoting dishonesty. He emphasized that disciplinary measures would be enforced against the 91 contracted professionals implicated in the malpractice.

Number of Candidates and Examination Timeline

The 2024 KCSE exams saw a total of 962,512 candidates sitting for the tests, which were conducted between October 22 and November 22, 2024.

KNEC’s Approach to Exam Malpractices

In November 2024, Ogamba assured parents, students, and educators that the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) had revised its approach to handling malpractice cases.

He stated that KNEC would no longer cancel the results of entire centers if malpractices were detected. Instead, each case would be investigated individually to avoid unnecessary consequences for innocent candidates.

Ogamba emphasized that the new approach would ensure that only those directly involved in misconduct would face penalties, ensuring fairness and preventing collective punishment for entire groups of students or schools.

Previous Year’s Results and Investigation Outcomes

In the previous year, 2023, KNEC had withheld the results of more than 4,000 students due to suspected irregularities. Additionally, the results of four candidates were canceled for impersonation.

Former Education CS Ezekiel Machogu explained that, while no irregularities were reported during the exams themselves, some candidates had impersonated others.

Following investigations, KNEC cleared the results of Cardinal Otunga Boys in Kisii, where 432 students’ results had been withheld, and Nyakongo Secondary School, with 263 affected students.

Other schools impacted by the investigations included Mabera Secondary School in Migori and Samoei Secondary School in Nandi.

Disciplinary Action for Contracted Professionals

The investigations into the 2023 malpractices also revealed that 120 contracted professionals had been involved in irregularities. Ogamba confirmed that disciplinary action would be taken against those individuals as part of the ongoing efforts to maintain the integrity of the examination process.
