Directors Arrested as PS Kipsang Visits Site Where 5 KCPE Candidates Drowned

Two directors of Amazement Park in Uasin Gishu have been arrested following the tragic loss of five KCPE students during a recreational outing at a man-made reservoir.

PS Belio Kipsang paid a visit to Arap Moi Primary School and the location where five KCPE candidates tragically drowned when their boat capsized in Uasin Gishu County.

Kipsang conveyed that the incident is currently under investigation and will proceed in accordance with the law.

He expressed deep sorrow over the occurrence and offered prayers for the affected families, as well as for the other students taking their exams at the school.

Kipsang mentioned that one candidate who survived the accident has been discharged from the hospital and is now participating in the exams.

Uasin Gishu police commander Benjamin Mwanthi confirmed these arrests and noted that the investigation remains ongoing, pending the duo’s legal proceedings.

Five KCPE candidates were enjoying a leisurely day on Saturday, just before the national exams scheduled for Monday, when their boat capsized.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu declared that his ministry is collaborating with the Interior Ministry to conduct “comprehensive and conclusive inquiries into the incident.”

According to a police report, the five students were part of a gathering of Standard Six and Standard Eight students, accompanied by their teachers, for recreational activities at a hotel.

Tragically, the drowning incident claimed the lives of five Standard Eight students, and emergency responders rushed a surviving Standard Six student to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital due to severe oxygen deficiency.

In the meantime, Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii offered condolences to the affected families and assured them of the county government’s support in giving the deceased a proper farewell.

Kipsang emphasized that the students at Arap Moi School have received counseling following the incident and are currently proceeding with their examinations.

He assured that they would make every effort to support the children in actively taking their exams, regardless of the consequences of this unfortunate incident.

Kipsang reported that the exams commenced smoothly in all the schools in the region. He also revealed that he had met with the regional security teams to ensure the seamless progress of the exams.

Although areas experiencing rain caused minor delays, Kipsang reported that no significant incidents occurred as the exams began.

He emphasized that the multi-agency team in Uasin Gishu would put in a lot of effort to address the situation at the accident-affected school.

The Kenyan authorities have scheduled the Kenya Certificate of Primary Examinations (KCPE) and the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) to occur from October 30 to November 24.

The number of candidates is as follows: 1.4 million for KCPE, 1.2 million for KPSEA, and 903,260 for KCSE. These students had gone to the park as part of their exam preparations
