Decry Over Shortage of Teachers and Basic Facilities in Junior Secondary Schools.
The Deputy Speaker of Isiolo County Assembly, David Lemantile, along with the Leader of Majority, Abdirashid Diba, have expressed concern over the inadequate learning environment for Junior Secondary Schools (JSS).
According to the leaders, most schools lack basic facilities such as laboratories, libraries, and adequate classrooms. Additionally, a staggering 85% of the JSS schools do not have enough teachers to cater to the needs of the students.
Mr. Lemantile stated that the shortage of teachers in Isiolo is due to the suspension of the delocalization of teaching staff, which led most teachers to return to their home counties.
He made these remarks during the launch of the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) bursary worth Sh.1.26 million.
He also revealed that the County Government would increase its bursary allocation from Sh.35 million to Sh.50 million in the 2023-24 financial year.
During the NGAAF bursary launch event, 250 students received financial assistance, with needy secondary school students receiving Sh.5,000 and those in universities receiving Sh.10,000.
Mr. Lemantile praised the NGAAF bursary disbursement plan for representing the face of Isiolo, as the committee charged with the payout was drawn from minority groups, ensuring fair distribution of the cash.
Mr. Abdirashid Diba, the Leader of Majority in the County Assembly, acknowledged the efforts of the Women Representative, Ms. Mumina Bonaya, who picked five committee members from each Ward to ensure that only disadvantaged students benefited.
He also urged the youth to register with Technical and Vocational Education Training Institutions (TVET) to acquire skills that would enable them to take up alternative employment opportunities, since white-collar jobs are scarce.
Mr. Salesio Kiambi, the Wabera Ward MCA, called for an investigation of the chiefs and their assistants who are alleged to have been stealing relief food meant for the poor. He urged the local administration to take swift action against these corrupt individuals.
