Deceit and Drama: Riara Springs Academy Uses Slang and Décor in ‘The Eyes Have It’

During the ongoing national drama festivals in Mombasa, Riara Springs Academy displayed a great deal of creativity through their play titled ‘The eyes have it’. The play is about a student who falsely claims to be visually impaired in order to gain sympathy from the school administration and secure an admission slot at Ocean Pearls Academy.

However, the school administration insists on taking her through an eye test in their mobile clinic. After initially resisting, the student eventually gives in and inadvertently reveals that she can actually see.

“I can see. I mean I can see your point,” she said.

The Riara team uses a crafty method to communicate the eyesight check by creating a wooden décor piece painted with the cornea of an eye. The wooden piece rotates and shows layers and parts of the eye, impressing the audience with their creativity.

The students also used slang language that has been previously used in songs and sayings, which includes phrases such as “Kwenda huko mzungu mwitu wewe” (Go to the forest, you wild white person), “Subaru ya mambaru inakam na imejaa” (The Mambaru Subaru is coming and it’s full), and “Hakai vibaya anakaa chapo” (He doesn’t look bad, he looks like a chapati).

The play was selected to be performed at State House, Nairobi on Saturday, with President William Ruto expected to attend. The drama festival is being held at Shimo la Tewa Secondary School in Mombasa, where various schools showcase their creative talents.

Riara Springs Academy’s performance stood out due to their innovative approach to communicating the eyesight check, as well as their use of slang language to add humor to the play.
