Daystar University Ends Partnership with Israeli Embassy After Online Backlash

Daystar University Ends Partnership with Israeli Embassy After Online Backlash.

Daystar University has nullified a memorandum of understanding it signed on Monday with the Israeli Embassy to establish a ‘Zion Forest’ at its premises.

The decision came after significant public criticism over the partnership, considering the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict that has lasted 14 months, resulting in over 45,000 Palestinian casualties.

The revocation of the agreement was confirmed by Vice Chancellor Prof. Laban Ayiro, who clarified that the university does not support the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Middle East. He emphasized the institution’s commitment to the sanctity of life and peaceful co-existence among people.

Earlier, while unveiling the agreement, Prof. Ayiro had explained that the initiative aimed to enrich the university’s green spaces by planting 5,000 trees of Biblical species at its Athi River Main Campus.

He highlighted that the Zion Forest symbolized collaboration between Israel and Kenya, demonstrating a shared commitment to environmental sustainability and educational progress.

Public Reaction

  • Opposition: A section of Kenyans, including Daystar alumni, strongly criticized the deal. Activist Al Amin Kimathi questioned the decision, suggesting it could tarnish Prof. Ayiro’s career. Others, like a user identified as @JarelTheArtist, signed a petition calling for the MoU’s cancellation, arguing that Palestinians deserve equal humanity.
  • Support: Conversely, some supported the partnership. One user pointed out that Daystar University, as a leading Kenyan institution, has the mandate to collaborate with international partners to enhance its potential, regardless of political dynamics.

Key Developments

  • The Israeli Embassy’s social media post, featuring First Lady Rachel Ruto’s involvement in the tree-planting initiative, remains active, though Prof. Ayiro has deleted his related announcement on X.
  • A public petition has since gained momentum, reflecting growing concern about the university’s association with Israel amidst the conflict.
