Danstan Omari, a renowned advocate, defended a corporal accused of shooting William Mayange, a student at Maseno University, during mass action protests.

In an urgent letter addressed to the Inspector General of Police, Japhet Koome, Omari claimed that the police officer was not on duty at the time of the alleged shooting.

Omari, who is an advocate of the High Court and works at the law firm Musyoki Mogaka and Co. Advocates, demanded four documents to prove his client’s innocence.

He requested a certified extract from the Occurrence Book entries at Maseno Police Station for the period between March 19 and 23, as well as documents to prove that the bullet that killed the student did not come from his client’s assigned weapon.

“We kindly but very urgently seek a certified from the Arma Movement book for the duration between March 19 and 23 and the list of police officers assigned coverage on March 20 at Kisumu,” the letter read in part.

The letter also sought information on the operation order for the Kisumu anti-riot operation, specifically the police officers assigned coverage on March 20, and those from Maseno who were called to provide reinforcement.

Omari warned that he would take legal action against individuals spreading false information about his client’s involvement in the shooting. He also expressed concern for his client’s safety, as her photos and contacts had been widely shared on social media, potentially exposing her to attacks from the public.

Omari informed the Inspector General that his client had been forced to pull her children out of school due to safety concerns.

The Inspector General had previously stated on March 23 that officers shot Mayange after a crowd attempted to storm into Maseno Police Station during the mass action protests.

Omari’s defense of the corporal accused of the shooting raises questions about the circumstances surrounding the incident and highlights the need for thorough investigation and evidence to establish the truth.

The urgency with which Omari requested the documents and his vow to take legal action against those spreading false information indicate the seriousness of the situation and the need for a fair and transparent legal process.

The safety concerns faced by the accused corporal, as mentioned by Omari, further emphasize the need for proper investigation and protection of the rights of all parties involved.
