Education Cabinet Secretary, Ezekiel Machogu, is scheduled to appear before the Senate on Wednesday in order to address the tragic events that unfolded at Mukumu Girls High School.

The school, located in Kakamega County, was closed for a period of three weeks starting from April 3, 2023, following the unfortunate deaths of three students due to a diarrhoea outbreak.

During his appearance, Machogu will outline the steps taken by the Ministry of Education to facilitate the resumption of classes at the affected school.

In addition to discussing the actions taken, Machogu will also shed light on the support provided by the ministry to the families of the deceased students.

This will demonstrate the government’s commitment to assisting those who have been affected by this unfortunate incident.

Furthermore, the Cabinet Secretary will address the question of compensation for the families impacted by the suspected contamination, indicating whether the ministry has any plans in this regard.

The diarrhoea outbreak at Mukumu Girls High School resulted in the hospitalization of more than 124 students at the Kakamega County General Hospital.

The outbreak was suspected to be a case of food and water poisoning.

The Director General of Health, Patrick Amoth, stated that the food consumed by the students was contaminated with human faeces.

“The Ministry wishes to inform the general public that this disease is likely to be a mixture of E. coli and Salmonella typhi which usually occurs if water sources are contaminated with these micro-organisms,” he said in a statement.

In response to the incident, Machogu took swift action. Jane Mmbone was appointed as the new school head, while the previous principal, Frida Ndolo, was transferred to another position.

Additionally, the Cabinet Secretary dissolved the school’s board of management.

Unfortunately, the consequences of the outbreak have been severe, resulting in the loss of three students and one teacher.
