Court Orders 7 Days Detention of 8 Litein Boys High School Students Over Arson

Court Orders 7 Days Detention of 8 Litein Boys High School Students Over Arson.

Kericho Law Courts has directed that 8 students from Litein Boys High School be detained for 7 days to allow police to complete investigations into arson, burglary and malicious damage to property at the school.

Principal Magistrate Fredrick Nyakundi on Tuesday 23rd ordered that the students be held at Litein Police Station under the supervision of Litein OCS. The court also prohibited members of the public and the media from publishing photos or videos of the suspects until the hearing and determination of the case.

According to submissions in court, the students were found in possession of assorted property including items stolen from teachers’ quarters. The court was also told that the students have information that can aid the ongoing investigations.

Preliminary findings showed that the unrest at the school was linked to resistance to sitting for Apex exams, a joint exam conducted by Litein Boys High School, Moi Tea, Litein Girls, Tengecha Boys and Korongoi Girls Secondary Schools. Earlier reports had indicated that the incident was due to the school refusing to allow students to watch a football match.

Other claims under review alleged that the students’ protest was due to dissatisfaction with the school administration refusing to facilitate examination malpractice before KCSE.

The ruling followed remarks by Kericho Governor Eric Mutai who confirmed that security agencies reviewed CCTV footage from the school before arresting the suspects. The Governor said the operation led to the arrest of 10 students.

Governor Mutai said, “I have met with the County security team today and I commend them for the work and the steps they have taken. As we speak now, 10 boys have been arrested.”
