Concerns Over Changing 2023 KCSE Results on KNEC Portal

Questions are being raised regarding the legitimacy of the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam results following the detection of significant irregularities by concerned parents.

Concerned parties shared images indicating that various schools obtained different results upon accessing the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) official portal. Grades for different subjects were observed to have changed in the shared results, prompting stakeholders to express concern.

Ndungu Nyoro, the Founder of Affecto, shared two sets of results from Kenya High School, revealing disparities in grades. The school allegedly scored B+ and B- in Kiswahili simultaneously, as well as A- and B in Mathematics.

George Kaluma, the Member of Parliament for Homa Bay, urged parents to address the discrepancies promptly to prevent any disadvantages for their children.

According to Kaluma, “Parents do not sleep. The results are changing every minute. You blink, it goes to A, blink again, and it will be an E.”

Following this revelation, the public questioned why some results were labeled as provisional, emphasizing the need for KNEC to swiftly clarify the discrepancies.

Kenyans drew parallels with the 2022 General Election, where candidates raised concerns about receiving different results on forms uploaded by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

In response to the situation, Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly Robert Alai remarked, “They are changing results all the time like Jose Carmago’s election results,” in reference to the dynamic nature of the results.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu and KNEC have not yet addressed the issue despite calls from critics.

During the release of the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) results, Machogu acknowledged errors in the exams. Candidates were affected by misalignments of marks, and grades in Kiswahili were incorrectly placed under Kenyan Sign Language. Additionally, grades in Science and Social Studies & Religious Education lacked the plus (+) and minus (-) signs.

Machogu admitted to lessons learned and emphasized that moving forward, the ministry would not utilize the same service provider for the release of KCSE examinations.
