Comprehensive Teacher Training to Reduce School-Related Sudden Deaths
The urgent call for the Ministry of Education to train teachers in identifying medical emergencies among students in schools has been emphasized by renowned cardiologist Dr. Betty Gikonyo.
Dr. Gikonyo highlighted the pressing need for teachers to acquire the skills to detect medical emergencies in students, aiming to mitigate the frequent occurrence of sudden deaths within educational institutions.
She emphasized that numerous instances of student fatalities in schools could be averted through early detection, stating that certain sudden deaths might be preventable with teacher training on recognizing symptoms indicative of conditions like heart disease.
Dr. Gikonyo made these remarks in Nairobi on Friday, during the launch of a health workshop for teachers from various parts of the country at Karen Hospital.
The annual workshop, specifically designed for teachers, aimed to raise awareness among educators regarding the identification of heart and other health issues in students.
Dr. Gikonyo emphasised the pivotal role of teachers as first responders in student health emergencies, emphasising the importance of equipping them adequately for such situations.
She stressed that the training should encompass not only the detection of health emergencies but also the initial intervention measures teachers should undertake.
The workshop, under the auspices of the Karen Hospital’s Heart to Heart Foundation, aimed to broaden teachers’ understanding of health issues among students.
Participants at the workshop expressed gratitude for the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills in identifying health problems and appropriate responses.
Additionally, they benefited from complimentary medical check-ups offered during the sensitization workshop’s inauguration.
