Thirty community libraries in underserved areas will receive a donation of 18,000 books to help boost literacy levels.
The organizers of the Moto Books and Arts Festivals are inviting authors, publishers, booksellers, and the general public to participate in the Adopt-A-Library initiative by donating books.
Mercy Kibira, the Moto Books and Arts Festival Director, said in a press release today that the book donations were part of the activities that would take place during a four-day book and arts festival to be hosted at the Village Market to commemorate World Books and Copyright Day.
“This initiative will see several publishing houses and authors adopt any of the 30 libraries across the country by donating their titles to the community-based resource and information centres,” she said.
Ms Kibira went on to say that they had already secured 9,000 of the targeted 18,000 books from Maktaba, a non-profit organization whose mission is to bridge the literacy gap between school children, youth, and adults from marginalized communities that for every library adopted, they would donate 300 books.
She encouraged those who wanted to participate to drop off the books at the Village Market, where the festival would be held or to send them via parcel delivery services.
The inaugural MOTO Books and Arts Festival will take place from the 21st to the 24th of April in order to rekindle interest in reading books and increase the impact of arts and literature in the country.

The festivals will bring together authors, publishers, illustrators, booksellers, artists, and brands from around the world to showcase their work and discuss emerging literary trends.
According to Ms Kibira, the festival will be graced by Nana Darkoa Sekyiamah, a world-renowned Ghanaian writer and blogger who has authored the best-selling book, ‘The Sex Lives of African Women.’
“The Moto Books and Arts Festival is an initiative that will help to connect like-minded people who are enthusiastic about books and the creative scene, and who also appreciate the hidden gems in the world of art and theatre,” says Ms Kibira.
The event’s anchor sponsors are Half Priced Books Limited and Village Market, and the celebrations will include an exhibition that will allow top publishing brands, authors, and book dealers to showcase outstanding books, art, and culture.
