Civil Society Organisations Defends KU In Land Take Over Dispute
Four civil society organizations have condemned Kenyatta University’s ongoing land dispute with the government.
Kenya Land Alliance, Kenya Human Rights Commission, Katiba Institute, and Mazingira Institute requested that the government follow due process.
The KU land saga, according to a statement from the lobby CSOs, is a threat to the rule of law.
“That the government halts any developments and sub-divisions on the land pending the determination of ELC Petition E029/2022.2,” the statement reads.
The statement goes on to say that all stakeholders, including students, alumni, and the general public, should speak out against the act.
“That the government stops the unethical and completely shameless harassment of KU staff as well as deploying a more compliant administration to facilitate the land acquisition,” the statement reads.
The lobbyists also urged government agencies to collaborate in resolving the KU land dispute.
“That the National Land Commission comes out to condemn this illegality and implements its mandate,” the statement reads.
They went on to say that public participation in the matter would ensure a smooth transition.
The title deed in question is LR No 11026/2 Grant 33404, which Joseph Kinyua said should be surrendered for subdivision in a letter to the council on July 7.
Kinyua stated that 30 acres will be set aside for the WHO emergency response center, while another 10 acres will be donated to the Africa Centres for Disease Control to build their Eastern Africa headquarters.

He stated that 180 acres will be given to the nearby Kenyatta University Teaching Research and Referral Hospital.
Another 190 acres will be given to the 10,000 Kamae squatters who already occupy the land illegally in Kahawa West through a separate title deed.
