Adults have been encouraged to enroll in special continuous education centers in an effort to increase the country’s literacy rate.

Director of Adult Education for Kakamega County, Isaiah Nyamweno, stated that the initiative would also promote socioeconomic growth and reduce ignorance among the local populace.

Nyamweno emphasized that through education, individuals could acquire dignity and respect, rendering them less susceptible to manipulation and better equipped to make informed decisions.

The director stated, while speaking in Butere Sub County on International Literacy Day, that the national government has emphasized the significance of adult education.

“Education as a fundamental requirement will assist adults in calculating their resources and empowering them economically,” he said.

Nyamweno remarked that the government had hired 26 full-time and part-time instructors in the region to assist with the enhancement of learning in various centers.

He added that they will continue to rely on National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) to mobilize learners in order to reach their intended objective.

He expressed his gratitude to NGAO for their ongoing support in mobilizing students to attend classes, which has resulted in increased enrollment in educational institutions.

According to the director, there is a close connection between adult and formal education, resulting in increased enrollment in elementary institutions.

Nyamweno pointed out that educated parents often exhibit greater concern for their children’s academic performance and enrollment compared to those who are illiterate.

However, he bemoaned the high levels of insufficient staff to operate the existing learning centers, as well as their remote locations.

He stated that they were urging the government to augment the number of tutors and establish additional centers in proximity to the learners to enhance convenience.

Departmental heads headed by area Deputy County Commissioner Hassan Hussein and other stakeholders attended the World Literacy Day event with the theme “Promoting literacy for a sustainable and peaceful Kenyan society.”
