CBC Was Introduced To Kill Public Schools – Sossion

Wilson Sossion, a nominated MP and former Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary-General, claims that the rollout of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) has harmed public schools.

According to Mr. Sossion, who appeared on Citizen TV’s Day Break show on Thursday, the transition from the 8-4-4 curriculum to the new education system was rushed, and state-owned schools are struggling to keep up.

Since the rollout began in 2017, he claims, this has created an opportunity for investors interested in the education sector to profit handsomely through private schools.

“CBC, the way it was introduced in this country, was to destroy the existence of public schools because they will never implement it. We did not prepare and it was just imposed,” Mr. Sossion said.

Sossion claims that public schools will die, opening the door for privatization adding that Whoever imposed it on this country intended to kill public schools.

This is despite the fact that Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha has stated that his ministry will begin inspecting private schools across the country to ensure they have adequate facilities for junior secondary schools.

The first batch of Grade 7 students will begin attending Junior Secondary schools as part of the CBC program in January of next year. Around 2.5 million students will be transferring.

Mr. Sossion, on the other hand, chastised the ministry for failing to provide quality public school education, which he believes is every Kenyan’s right.

“Prof. Magoha is now telling private schools to open up space to accommodate junior secondary schools… it is unconstitutional because education should be provided by the State,” he said.

Sossion, who is running for the Bomet senatorial seat on a UDA ticket, joins a growing chorus of political leaders and education stakeholders urging the government to halt implementation of the CBC.

They claim that the system lacks proper fundamental structures.

Following recent clashes between CS Magoha and anti-system political formations, President Uhuru Kenyatta stated unequivocally during the Madaraka Day Celebrations on June 1 that there would be no turning back on the CBC rollout.

The president stated that even after his term ends in August, the government has already put in place structures to ensure that the rollout does not stall.
