CBC Subject With No Qualified Teacher Raises Concern

Kathiani MP Robert Mbui has raised concerns regarding a subject taught in schools under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

According to Mbui, there is a lack of qualified teachers with the expertise to instruct learners on the combined unit of Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Sports, and Physical Health Education (P.H.E).

In a Monday morning talk show, Mbui claimed that the subject in question merges five former subjects into one, namely Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Sports, and P.H.E.

He questioned the criteria used to make this decision, emphasizing the subject’s incorporation of different and unique elements.

The lawmaker pointed out the specific challenges within the visual arts aspect, which requires a teacher to cover art and design, distinct from performing arts that involve music and drama.

Additionally, Mbui highlighted that sports and physical health education, also part of the subject, represent a different discipline altogether.

Mbui asserted that no professional teacher in Kenya or Africa could effectively teach all these subjects, stating that not even two or four teachers possess the required expertise.

Critiquing the CBC curriculum further, he argued that it was hastily put together, calling on the government to address and correct the situation.

He also expressed concerns about the academic path for Junior Secondary School (JSS) students, questioning whether there were classrooms available for Grade 9 students and pondering whether they would transition to high schools following the previous 8-4-4 system.

While discussing the CBC system, Mbui revealed that he had previously raised the issue in Parliament before the recess break, although it was not thoroughly addressed at that time.

The implementation of the CBC system has faced widespread scrutiny, with recent disputes between the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and JSS teachers over pensionable terms, potentially leading to a strike.

Additionally, representatives from Christian and Islamic religious groups raised questions about the content in some CBC books, expressing concerns about the perceived promotion of the LGBTQ+ agenda.
