Cash-Strapped Moi University Agrees To Pay Sh168 Million In Outstanding Bills

The cash-strapped Moi University has consented to pay a private hospital in Eldoret, Kenya, Sh168 million for medical services offered to its employees and their families.

In an agreement signed Thursday before Eldoret High Court Justice Eric Ogola by the university and Mediheal hospital, the university agreed to pay Sh 2 million every month until the balance is paid in full.

Justice Ogola, who presided over the case, approved the accord and designated it as a court order.

Former Kesses MP Swarup Mishra’s hospital went to court two years ago after the university failed to pay for medical services supplied to the institution’s 3,000 staff members and their families.

According to court documents, the university entered into an agreement with the private hospital ten years ago for the treatment of its employees and their wives.

In the lawsuit, attorney Aloo Romana represented the hospital, while attorney Eric Liyali defended Moi University.

Liyali informed the court that his client was prepared and willing to comply by the inked agreement about the payment of the hospital’s pending medical costs, estimated at Sh168 million.

This occurred when the hospital’s attorney expressed concern over the university’s repeated inability to pay the unpaid medical bill.

The judge informed the hospital administration that they might return to court if the university breached its agreement to clear the unpaid bill.
