After defeating Vihiga High School 12-7 in a closely contested final at St Mary’s Mundika High School, Butula Boys High School was crowned Western Region Secondary Schools 15s Rugby champions.

Koyonzo Secondary School, the 15s Rugby champions of the Western region, was disqualified for fielding an ineligible player, giving Butula a chance in the final. This was the second time Butula and Vihiga High had met, with the first meeting occurring in the group stage and resulting in a scoreless draw.

Koyonzo, who was the tournament’s pre-tournament favorite, was disqualified and will face disciplinary action in accordance with the KSSSA Sports rules.

Butula’s head coach, Shimenga Libondo, praised the team’s tenacity to withstand second-half pressure and emerge victorious.

“I want to thank our able opponents Vihiga for their spirited fight to last minute, even though we have won the match, we will work on our weakness if we must represent the country in East African games in Rwanda late this year,” noted Libondo.

After defeating Sigalame High School 55-52 in a championship game that drew a large crowd, Kamusinga High School’s basketball team outshined its rivals with their skills to retain their title.

According to Western Region Secondary School Games Chairperson Martin Waswa, an appeal against the Friends School Kamusinga basketball team by St. Peter’s Mumias has been dismissed.

“I appeal to all school principals and coaches, let us nurture talents and avoid fielding ineligible players. We must stick to the rules of the game,” said Waswa.

Butere Girls High School defeated their perennial rivals Tigoi Girls High School by a score of 80-52 in the girls’ basketball championship game. In their first Group ‘A’ game against Butere Girls, Tigoi, the defending champions, were defeated 44-32.

The regional hockey champions were the Musingu Boys High School and Tigoi Girls High School. Moi Girls Kamusinga from Bungoma won the handball championship after defeating Aboloi Secondary School 25-12 in the championship match.

Musingu Boys High School of Kakamega is the new regional handball champion after defeating St Luke’s Kimilili Boys High School in a controversial match.
