Bridging the Experience Gap: Nairobi College Seeks Internship Placements for Students.

Air Travel and Related Studies Centre (ATRSC) in Nairobi, Kenya is taking steps to provide internship placements for its students in order to prepare them for the workforce.

ATRSC’s managing director, Charles Gakuu, believes that education should make a difference in a student’s career prospects. He notes that many college students in Kenya graduate with theoretical knowledge but lack actual skills.

Gakuu asserts that employers expect experience from job applicants, and he hopes to bridge the experience gap for graduates entering the job market.

The decision to find internship placements for students was motivated by research and feedback from jobless graduates.

A study by Hoseah Kiplagat, Jennifer Khamasi, and Rachel Karei found that students often struggle to find internships and are forced to take any opportunity that comes their way.

The researchers recommend that institutions of higher learning should take responsibility for scouting and enrolling students for industrial attachment. They note that not having internship experience negatively impacts graduates, leaving them ill-prepared for the workplace.

Kenya’s workforce also faces challenges when it comes to worker education matching job-required education.

According to the Jobs Working Paper by the World Bank, more than 40% of Kenyans in the workforce are undereducated and not properly skilled. Only 34.5% of the country’s workforce has the necessary education for the job.

The traditional approach for students seeking internships in Kenya has been to find attachment opportunities on their own. ATRSC aims to change this by forging partnerships with industry players in the aviation, tourism, and hotel industries.

Gakuu says that ATRSC has been able to guarantee its students an industrial placement spot “by forging relationships with different players.”

The career coach emphasizes that colleges and industry need to work together more closely to enable students to find industrial attachment opportunities with ease.

Nuria Hussein, an ATRSC student studying a diploma in cabin crew, expresses relief that ATRSC is taking steps to provide internship placements for its students. She notes that some of her peers have struggled to find attachment opportunities in their areas of expertise, which is demoralizing.

Hussein believes that attachment is important because it provides actual experience, and hopes that more institutions of higher learning will take responsibility for finding internships for their students.
