The leaders of Baringo have agreed to construct the Sh500 million university that was put on hold four years ago due to location disputes.

Senator-elect William Cheptumo said the new administration’s top priority would be to start building the university.

Cheptumo stated, “Now that we have been elected and are from the same party, we will have a common development agenda, and the first step will be to agree on the location of the university.”

Cheptumo noted that they faced difficulty when someone went to court to stop the construction.

He expressed concern that most counties already had universities, so Baringo was falling behind.

Baringo North MP Benjamin Makilap, who was also present at the event, stated that the institution would employ more than 2,000 locals.

He noted that the best location would be the county headquarters, with branches opening in the other sub-counties over time.

“The best location is at the county seat in Kabarnet, and as leaders, we should not pull and push, but instead settle and construct it swiftly,” Makilap stated.

Rueben Kiborek, a representative from Mogotio, echoed these sentiments, stating that leaders needed to agree on the location of the university.

As long as the university was located within the county, there was no issue, and construction should be expedited.

Kiborek stated, “This is the leadership to deliver a university to the people of Baringo, and we should not let the people of Baringo down because it will result in long-awaited development.”

Musa Sirma, the newly elected Member of Parliament for Eldama Ravine, stated that his sub-county was prepared to have the university built there if they could not agree on a location, as there were large tracts of government land available.

In a rebuttal, Baringo South MP Charles Kamuren stated that despite his constituency having a branch of Egerton University, the university’s financial difficulties forced them to close, necessitating the proposed university.

The inauguration ceremony was also attended by MP Florence Jematia, CS Labour Simeon Chelugui, and former Governor Stanley Kiptis.
