According to the National Police Service, the bandit attack on school buses in Elgeyo Marakwet could have been avoided.
Police spokesperson Bruno Shioso said in a statement on Friday that the school’s administration had followed the Ministry of Education’s transportation policy.
“This unfortunate attack could have been avoided if the school administration had exercised caution and complied with existing Ministry of Education policy on school transport beyond 1800hrs,” he said.
The attack, which targeted innocent passengers and schoolchildren, was described by police as callous and irresponsible.
According to Shioso, the National Police Service has already dispatched a multi-agency security operation team to track down the bandits.
Hilary Mutyambai, the Inspector General of Police, also directed all police commands across the country to enforce the night travel policy for schools.
During the Thursday night attack, the bus driver was killed on the spot, and 13 students and two teachers were injured.
At around 10 p.m., the incident occurred along the Arror-Mogil road near Tot in Elgeyo Marakwet County.
The students and teachers were on their way home from an academic tour in a convoy of three buses from Tot Day School, Kerio Valley School, and Mogil School.

Education CS George Magoha warned school heads on Friday not to let buses leave school after 6.30 p.m.
During the handover of exam container keys and padlocks to county directors, Magoha stated that heads who defy this directive will face disciplinary action.

Interior CS Fred Matiang’i agreed with Magoha, saying that evening travel is dangerous for students.
“We will arrest the principal for violating school rules. School buses should not be out past 6.30,” Matiangi said.
