Babu Owino Threatens to Lead Student Demonstrations Against Hiked University Fees
Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has announced his intention to mobilize university students from all 47 counties to fight for their rights.
Speaking at a homecoming party for Luanda MP Dick Maungu in Vihiga county, Owino stated that students should be willing to fight for their rights, but did not guarantee that the demonstrations would be peaceful.
The Azimio leaders, led by Raila Odinga, have called on the government to reconsider its decision to increase university tuition fees from sh16,000 to sh48,000 following the removal of High Education Loans Board subsidies.
The Embakasi MP’s comments come in response to this call to action, as he believes that students must take matters into their own hands to ensure that their rights are protected.
Additionally, Owino discussed the high cost of living in Kenya, stating that the country has the potential to produce enough food to sustain itself. He argued that Kenya must invest in irrigation to achieve this goal, and should not be relying on rain to water crops.

Azimio coalition has taken a strong stance against plans to triple university fees, stating that they will vehemently oppose such a move.
Instead, they believe that the government should develop a funding model that is fair and sustainable for universities, and ensure that the appointment of university managers is based on merit rather than tribal affiliations.
