Ann Cheruiyot Wins Kericho’s KNUT Executive Secretary Seat
Ann Cheruiyot was declared executive Secretary of the Kericho Branch of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) after defeating her major opponent, Gedeon Mugun.
Ms. Cheruiyot, who is the first woman to hold the position in Rift Valley, stated that she is devoted to improving the welfare of teachers while rigorously carrying out her duties and obligations.
“I am your servant any time, and I will stand with each and every one of you. Thank you teachers for electing me to the office. I will stand to see that your welfare improves. I will work with the weak and mighty. I will be honest and sincere as I work for you, “said Ms Cheruiyot.
Ms. Cheruiyot received 496 votes to Mugun’s 95 votes in the Branch elections held on Friday at Kapsoit secondary school, where teachers’ trade union members from the six sub-counties in the area gathered to cast their ballots.
She had already competed for the job during the branch elections held the previous year, but lost to Stanley Mutai, who is the current KNUT first national vice chairman.
Similarly, Kericho County Labour Officer Richard Litaba urged the government to involve teachers’ unions in the task committee to facilitate the seamless implementation of the CBC..
He stated that the teachers’ union was in the greatest position to provide guidance to the task force.
“As Teachers, we welcome President William Ruto’s decision to create a taskforce to review and guide the implementation of CBC and we as teachers want to be included in the body as we are best placed to advice the taskforce.” said Litaba.
In his inauguration address, President William Ruto stated that the government will establish an education Reform committee that will solicit Kenyans’ opinions on the curriculum.
This is in response to parental concerns on the double transition of students to secondary schools in January, as a result of limited accommodation and the high expense of the CBC.
