Angry Protests in Uasin Gishu County as Parents Shut Down School Amid Academic Crisis
Upset parents took a stand on Thursday, sealing off the entrances of Mafuta Secondary School in Moiben, Uasin Gishu County. They expressed their discontent over the school’s reported persistent poor performance in last year’s KCSE exams.
Venting their frustrations, the parents, advocating for the ousting of the Principal, accused him of neglecting his duty to the students. The top-performing student managed a D+, closely followed by a D-, while the remaining candidates settled for E grades.

Addressing the issue, Mike Bett, a concerned parent, questioned, “We, as Mafuta Secondary School parents, are distressed by the results. With about 20 Es, and the leading student achieving only a D+, we wonder why we have such outcomes if the Principal is genuinely committed to serving.”
Muhammed Abdi, the Board Chair, criticized the Principal’s tenure, stating, “Since this teacher was brought here, seven years have passed, and the children have consistently failed. He takes and sells school property without the board’s approval.”
Accusing the Principal of arbitrary decision-making and absenteeism, the protesting parents forcibly removed him from the school. They alleged that he operated without involving the board or parents, often being absent for personal errands.
Highlighting the school’s seven-year poor performance streak, Board Chair Abdi emphasized, “Karatasi was appointed as Principal without qualification; our children have suffered. We demand that he leaves today.”

Expressing dissatisfaction, parent Jeniffer Keter commented, “We’ve been complaining, but there’s been no improvement. This Principal has been indifferent, neglecting the children and focusing on his own affairs, leading to our children’s downfall.”
In defense, Principal Chrispinus Mukenya blamed the parents for contaminating the learning environment, hindering effective discharge of his duties. “The mean grade was 1.0. Without support, you can’t produce results… when you’re treated like this, there’s no way,” he argued.
The protesting parents later moved to Mafuta Primary School, where a similar scenario unfolded. Concerned about the primary school’s dismal performance, they called on the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to intervene and secure their children’s futures.
