National Celebrations of International Adult Literacy preparations are complete at Emurua Dikirr Primary School in Narok County, and thousands of locals are expected to attend.

Mr. Ezekiel Machogu, Cabinet Secretary for Education, and Mr. Patrick Ntutu, Governor of Narok, are expected to lead the celebrations that seek to increase literacy in the country.

Ms. Janet Rotich, Deputy Director of the Department of Adult and Continuing Education, stated that the annual event was conducted in the region because many adults have expressed an interest in education.

She confirmed that certificates will be awarded to the best adult learners to encourage more adults who did not have the opportunity to attend high school to return to education.

She expressed satisfaction that the residents had embraced the event and anticipated a vibrant day on Friday.

Mr. Solomon Mpapale, deputy county commissioner for the Trans Mara East Sub County, stated that 25 entertainment groups were prepared to entertain the visitors, but only the top five groups would be given priority.

“We are well-prepared to welcome our guests. This day is extremely significant to us because so many adults have adopted education,” he said.

Mr. Benjamin Obonyo, director of Adult and Continuing Education for Narok County, stated that adults are taught in various phases, including adult basic literacy, in which students are taught to write and read simple instructions.

The second phase is post-literacy, which is the application, retention, and use of the acquired skills to pursue further education, and the third phase is functional literacy, in which the students enroll in vocational training institutions and partake in community development.

The subsequent phase is continuous education, during which students take the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, and university courses.

Ms. Mantaine Ene Sankale, a 74-year-old woman who is acquiring basic literacy, will be one of the individuals celebrating the day.

The mother of eight children, scores of grandchildren, and great-grandchildren stated that she was unable to enroll in school as a child because she was responsible for caring for her father’s flock.

The elderly woman from the Ntulele area in Narok East Sub County urged locals to educate their children at a young age so they can adapt to the changing world.

Adult Learners Day celebrations will be conducted on September 8 in the Emurua Dikirr area of Trans Mara East Sub County.

The theme for this year is “Literacy promotes social cohesion and sustainable development.” The national event was conducted in Mandera County last year.
