Kenya has enough tertiary institutions to accommodate all Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination candidates.
Dr Mercy Wahome, CEO of Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services (KUCCPS), stated that all KCSE exam candidates have the opportunity to enroll in institutions of higher learning to pursue a course of their choice.
According to her, KUCCPS can place students in private and public colleges and universities for courses approved by the government.
Dr Wahome, who spoke in Nakuru after supervising the opening and distribution of KCSE materials, urged teachers to continue uploading the course application forms that students filled out before the exams began in the KUCCPS systems before the window closes on April 1.
She explained that once the results are released in April, students will be able to revise their courses.
“We have opportunities in both government and private institutions for all the 800,000 candidates sitting the exams, as we do not have a shortage of colleges, universities and TVETs (Technical and Vocational Education and Training),” she said.
She, on the other hand, bemoaned cases of exam cheating.
She urged teachers and exam administrators to discourage students from engaging in exam malpractice because they all have equal access to tertiary institutions regardless of their grades.
She explained that the majority of students are unaware of the opportunities provided by the government and that students would be encouraged to enroll in courses that will help them advance in their careers.
She urged students to reconsider their attitudes toward technical courses like agriculture, which are aligned with the government’s Big Four agenda.
According to Dr. Wahome, the majority of applications received by KUCCPS are for medical, nursing, and engineering programs.

“We have so far received about 50,000 applications for nursing and medicine and over 5,000 for engineering courses. We are encouraging students to think outside courses as the world is changing,” she said.
She urged students to continue filing applications in the KUCCPS system, which is open to schools until April, with the assistance of their career teachers.
