Akello Misori Calls for Review of Education Budget Allocation to Address Teacher Stagnation.

The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Secretary-General, Akello Misori, has asked the government to increase funding to the Ministry of Education to address the teacher stagnation in the sector.

Speaking during the World Teachers’ Day, Misori said despite the progress in teacher recruitment and staffing, many teachers are still facing delayed promotions, inadequate professional development opportunities and limited career growth due to constrained budgetary allocations.

He noted as the teaching workforce is growing, proportional growth in the education budget is necessary to support both professional growth and welfare of teachers across the country.

“As we grow in numbers, the education ministry allocation should grow to a larger proportion so that we can address our teachers’ stagnation in the workplace,” Misori said.

Misori also wants equitable distribution of resources so that teachers at all levels can benefit from continuous professional growth and capacity building programmes especially those aligned to modern teaching practices and digital literacy.

He asked the government to prioritize teachers’ welfare and motivation as part of educational reforms, saying teacher stagnation undermines morale and affects the quality of teaching.
