The Government of Kenya has reaffirmed its commitment to innovation, scaling pathways and commercialisation of research outputs across the country’s universities.

This was announced by the Principal Secretary State Department for Science, Research and Innovation, Professor Shaukat Abdulrazak during a meeting with Vice Chancellors from over thirty universities in Nairobi.

He urged all stakeholders to be proactive in scientific research, innovation and commercialisation to deliver benefits to Kenyan citizens.

The Principal Secretary launched a Think-Tank comprising of renowned intellectuals with domain expertise to provide input and direction to the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

He said innovation is key to solving national challenges, economic development and job creation especially for the youth.

During the meeting, Professor Abdulrazak also announced the addition of eleven more universities to the Institutional Commercialisation (IS) Programme. He said this will strengthen Kenya’s innovation ecosystem by increasing inclusivity and institutional participation.

The Principal Secretary commended the Vice Chancellors who have shown commitment to transforming their institutions into entrepreneurial hubs especially through participation in the Entrepreneurial Leaders Training Programme.

He also emphasized the need to align with global innovation trends, exercise strategic leadership and use the Entrepreneurial Institutional Maturity Framework (EIMF) to guide institutional development.

“We celebrated fourteen institutions for their leadership in the Institutional Commercialisation (IS) Programme and the innovative solutions showcased during the Pitch Session which was a reflection of Kenya’s ingenuity,” said the Principal Secretary.

He concluded by calling for all stakeholders to work together to align and accelerate progress towards the country’s innovation and commercialisation goals.
