9,000 KCPE Students To Benefit From Elimu Scholarships.
Approximately 9,000 students who took the KCPE in 2021 will be awarded government scholarships for their secondary education.
Education CS George Magoha stated on Wednesday that the Elimu scholarships will be distributed to deserving but underserved students across the country.
The Kenyan government, Equity Bank, and the World Bank are all sponsors of the Elimu scholarship program.
Since 2019, approximately 9000 students from low-income families have benefited from the program.
The scholarship covers school fees, transportation, instructional materials, and the four-year secondary education period.
According to Magoha, 4,000 of those children will come from urban slums, and the rest will come from every sub-county.
He spoke at Kenya High School in Nairobi on Wednesday, where he commissioned a classroom.
Magoha confirmed that he will personally supervise the vetting of the beneficiaries to ensure that the sponsorship is only given to deserving cases.
“What we shall make sure that is done is that we shall ensure we get the right candidates for this position, so you will see me in the field,” Magoha said.
Prof Magoha reassured parents that all children who took the KCPE exams would be given an equal opportunity to attend national schools based on performance, choices, and affirmative action.
According to the CS, Form One selection will be based on merit, with affirmative action used to ensure that all national schools have a national perspective.
He stated that no child will be disadvantaged in the placement process and insisted that not all candidates who scored more than 400 points would be placed in national schools.

According to Prof. Magoha, the selection criteria also favor candidates who took the exam under difficult conditions and scored well.
He dismissed critics of the selection formula, claiming that 9,000 government-sponsored Elimu Scholarships would benefit top scorers who lacked the financial means to attend secondary school.
