The general election is expected to disrupt the school calendar because a number of educational institutions will be used as polling places.

The majority of the institutions are primary and secondary schools, universities, and technical training institutes.

According to several circulars and messages obtained by the Star, schools that will serve as tallying centers will be closed on Monday for the midterm.

“To all parents, students will break for midterm on Monday 1/8/2022 at 8 am as the school has been identified as a tallying center,” the message reads.

On Friday, August 5, another school that is not a tallying center will release students.

The Ministry of Education’s school calendar previously stated that students would take a three-day break on August 11 and return three days later.

However, due to the August 9 election, students will be unable to continue their studies between August 1 and August 10.

Almost 250 schools will be used as tallying centers, according to a gazette notice from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

In the second schedule of county tallying centers, 15 of the 47 counties will have school-based tallying centers.

The counties affected are Mombasa, Embu, Kiambu, Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, Kakamega, Tana River, Nyeri, Kapsabet, and Vihiga, according to the notice.

Machakos, Isiolo, Murang’a, Laikipia, and Nyamira are also affected.

Bandari Maritime Academy, Mau Mau Secondary, Isiolo Boys, Kangaru Girls, Nyeri Primary, Kiambu High, Kitale School Girls’, Kapsabet Boys, Nanyuki High, Nakuru Boys, Kakamega High, Chavakali High, and Kebirigo Boys are among the schools.

According to the IEBC, another 17 higher education institutions will be used as county tallying centers.

The counties affected are Kilifi, Taita Taveta, Garissa, Baringo, Kericho, Busia, Garissa, Makueni, Narok, Bomet, Kisumu, and Turkana, according to the notice.

Other counties include Uasin Gishu, Kajiado, Bungoma, Homa Bay, Migori, and Kisii.

Pwani University, Taita Taveta University, Garissa University, Wote TTI, Turkana University College, Eldoret Polytechnic, Maasai Mara University, and Masaai TTI are among the institutions.
