20 Years Unpaid Pension Dues
For over two decades, a group of retired Kenyan teachers has been locked in a relentless legal battle with the government to claim their rightful pensions.
The saga began in 1997 when the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) agreed to pay these teachers a lump sum in addition to their monthly compensation. However, after the initial payment in 1998, subsequent disbursements never materialized.
Six retired teachers, Gidraff Kimatta, Joseph Mwenja, Daniel Kamau, Simon Kamau, Samwel Karanja, and Patrick Mwangi, took legal action on behalf of their 50,000 colleagues.
Despite favorable rulings from various levels of the Judiciary, the government has yet to fulfill its commitment. The elderly retirees grapple with health challenges and dwindling numbers, while their fight for justice remains mired in bureaucracy and delays.
Despite numerous assurances and debates in the National Assembly and the Senate, the retired teachers have seen little progress. They are grappling with the frustration of a seemingly unending legal battle and an uncertain future as they grow older.
The judiciary upheld their rights, but the implementation of court orders remains elusive, leaving retirees in a protracted struggle for their dues.
