2023 November Business Examinations Timetable and Instructions

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has released the timetable for the 2023 November Business Examinations.

This document provides essential instructions and cautions for candidates, supervisors, invigilators, teachers, and all stakeholders involved in the examination process.

General Instructions

Time Allocation: The time allowed for each paper is clearly stated on the question paper. No extra time will be granted. Candidates must strictly adhere to the allotted time.

Visually Handicapped Candidates: Visually handicapped candidates will not receive additional time beyond what is indicated on their respective papers. They are allowed 30 minutes over and above the standard time for all subjects.

Reading Time: Any time allocated for reading through questions is included in the total time shown on the timetable, unless special paper instructions specify otherwise.

Important Notice:a. Candidates are reminded to review the regulations governing conduct, available on page 20 of this document. b. Supervisors must ensure that candidates write their names and index numbers on their answer scripts before collecting them.

Instructions to Supervisors, Invigilators, Teachers, and Candidates

Supervisors, invigilators, teachers, and candidates are urged to follow these important instructions during the examination period:

Be punctual: Candidates must be seated in the Examination Room five minutes before the scheduled examination time. All sessions commence at 8:00 a.m.

Late Arrival: Candidates arriving late must provide a satisfactory reason to the supervisor. Papers will not be given to candidates more than half an hour late, except in exceptional circumstances.

Verify Examination Paper: If a candidate receives an examination paper for which they are not registered or if the questions suggest that additional materials should have been distributed, they should immediately inform the supervisor.

Follow Directions: Candidates must carefully follow any general directions provided at the beginning of a paper, such as limitations on the number of questions to be answered.

Proper Identification: Candidates should write their name, index number, and the paper’s name on the first page of each answer book or sheet used. The index number must appear on every sheet or page. Answers should be written on both sides of the paper, excluding margins.

Question Numbers: Each answer should begin with the question number, clearly written in the left-hand margin. Copying the question is unnecessary, and a blank line should be left after each answer.

Writing Instruments: Candidates may use black or blue ink and fountain pens or ballpoint pens. Pencils should only be used for diagrams. Handwriting and spelling will be considered in evaluation.

Read Carefully: Candidates should read questions thoroughly to avoid wasting time on unasked information.

Time Management: Candidates should not allocate excessive time to a few questions, leaving insufficient time for others they can answer.

Submission: When instructed to stop writing, candidates must arrange their answer books and sheets in the correct order, ensuring their index number is on each page. Answer sheets should be handed out to the supervisor.

Withdrawal Notification: Any withdrawal from the examination must be communicated to KNEC before taking any papers.

Cautions to Candidates

Candidates must be aware of the following cautions during the examination:

  • Punctuality: Leaving the examination room before the allocated time is not allowed except with the supervisor’s special permission. No candidate may take a question paper out of the examination room.
  • Confidentiality: Candidates should ensure that their answers or written sheets are not visible to other candidates. No unfair assistance, copying, or unfair practices are allowed.
  • No Communication: Candidates are strictly prohibited from communicating with each other or outsiders during the examination.
  • Unauthorized Materials: Candidates may only use mathematical tables provided by KNEC. These tables should not contain additional notes or data. The use of slide rulers should comply with regulations.

  • Return Incorrect Papers: Incorrect question papers must be immediately returned to the supervisor.
  • Unauthorized Materials: Candidates must not have any unauthorized materials in their possession or nearby during the examination, except for the provided question paper and authorized materials
  • Mathematical Tables: Candidates may use only mathematical tables printed by KNEC, which should not contain additional notes. Slide rulers should not contain formulas or data that provide undue advantages.
  • Rough Work: Any rough work should be done on official answer paper and left on desks for collection and destruction by the supervisor.
  • Conduct: Disorderly conduct or causing disturbances near the examination room is a serious examination irregularities.
  • Mobile Phones: Mobile phones are strictly prohibited in examination rooms and centers. Possession of a mobile phone will result in the cancellation of results.

Penalties for Examination Irregularities

Candidates must be aware of the penalties for examination irregularities, as outlined in the KNEC Act 2012:

  1. In cases where candidates commit examination irregularities, authorities will cancel their results for the entire subject, and they will receive an “Y” designation.
  2. If a center experiences widespread irregularities, officials will cancel the examination results for the entire center.
  3. Penalties, including imprisonment and fines, apply to individuals involved in examination malpractices.

Candidates are strongly advised to avoid any examination malpractice to prevent severe consequences.
