
20 New Academic Giants in Gusii Region (Kisii & Nyamira)
Kisii and Nyamira county schools outperformed the traditional academic powerhouses in Kenya on the recently released KCSE exam results for the year 2022.
1. Rigoko Day Secondary School
Among the 20 New Academic Giants is Rigoko Day Secondary School in Borabu Constituency, Nyamira County. It, for instance, experienced a stratospheric rise in KCSE performance between 2021 and 2022.
The school earned a mean score of 5.728 on the 2021 KCSE, administered between February and March of 2022.
The school received a mean score of 9.0 on the second 2022 KCSE exam, which was administered nine months later, between November and December 2022. (B plain).
All 52 students who sat the national exam in 2022 at Rigoko Day Secondary School attained a mean grade of C+ (plus) or higher, qualifying them for university admission.
Zablon Nyangena, the principal of Rigoko Day Secondary School, owes the results to discipline and work.
“We have, for several years, strived to identify the general weaknesses in the students’ academic performance. Hard work, discipline and dedication made us succeed. The 2022 KCSE exam results are a true picture of our work,” Nyangena told The Standard on Saturday, January 21.
2. Nyambaria Boys’ High School
Nyambaria Boys’ High School in Nyamira County topped the national 2022 KCSE exam with a mean score of A-, 10.897. (minus).
The institution had 488 KCSE candidates in 2022. 28 students earned an average grade of A (plain), 383 students earned an A-, 76 students earned a B+, and one student earned a B, guaranteeing that all 488 students qualified for university placement.
This is the first time the SDA-affiliated school has topped the national KCSE rankings.
The school had a mean score of 9.3086 (B plain) on the 2021 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), with four A (plain), 79 A- (minus), 231 B+ (plus), 130 B (plain), 77 B- (minus), 46 C+ (plus), five C (plain), four C- (minus), two D+ (plus), and two D. (plain). In that year, 580 candidates sat the exam.
3. Cardinal Otunga High School Mosocho
With a mean score of 10.76, Cardinal Otunga High School Mosocho in neighboring Kisii County is undoubtedly the second-best school in the nation (A minus).
The school registered 330 candidates for the KCSE exam in 2022. Four students scored a grade of A (plain), 201 A- (minus), 97 B+ (plus), three B (plain), and one B- (minus). Consequently, all 330 earned university spots.
4. St. Thomas Moore Riang’ombe Secondary
61 out of 87 students at St. Thomas Moore Riang’ombe Secondary School in Nyamira County earned at least a C+ plus to qualify for university placement.
The school’s mean score on the 2021 KCSE exam was 3.7 (D+). After nine months, the school’s mean score in the KCSE exam of 2022 surged to 7.1 (C+).
Principal Jared Monyancha stated that the result was not miraculous, but rather a reflection of the school’s hard work despite the obstacles it faces.
St. Thomas Moore Riang’ombe Secondary School, which has 378 students, has been chronically underfunded, undeveloped, and understaffed, according to Monyancha.
The school has 21 teachers, with only 14 employed by the Teachers’ Service Commission.
“We are partly a boarding school, with 98 per cent of the students coming from the Esise location neighbourhood. We hope that the good results in the 2022 exam will attract more students to our school,” added Monyancha.
5. St. Angela Segera Girls’ High School
St. Angela Segera Girls’ High School in Kisii County earned a substantially low mean score on the 2021 KCSE exam, but its results soared on the 2022 exam.
The school had a mean score of 5.91 in 2021. (C plain). In 2022, the school with 195 candidates and a mean score of 7.072 (C+) sent 131 students to university.
6. St. Gonzaga-Gonza Isoge Secondary School
St. Gonzaga-Gonza Isoge Secondary School in Nyamira County received a mean score of 9.8706 (B+), with all 85 of its students scoring between A- (minus) and B (plain). Eight students earned an A- (minus), 58 a B+ (plus), and 19 a B. (plain).
Richard Otwori, the school’s principal, stated that the institution’s academic performance has improved over the years.
“Over the last five years, our results have significantly improved. The 2022 KCSE performance is the best of them all,” Otwori told The Standard.
7. St. Paul’s Igonga Boys’ High School
St. Paul’s Igonga Boys’ High School in Kisii County achieved an average KCSE score of 10.24 (B+) in 2022. All 118 of its students gained university admission, with the lowest grade being a B. (plain).
Recent exam results placed the school in the top 15 best schools in the country.
St. Paul’s Igonga Boys’ High School had one A, 28 A-, 78 B+, and 11 B students (plain).
8. Mobamba High School
In Nyamira County, all 348 candidates from Mobamba High School who took the 2022 exam will attend university. The school improved its mean score from 5.11 in 2021 to 9.28 in last year’s exam to become one of the 20 New Academic Giants in Gusii.

It’s a same story at Kebirigo High School, Nyakongo Boys, Kebabe Girls, St. Kizito Nyansiongo Boys, and other schools, where authorities deny that anything is going on.
“As a school, we have fared very well we sat down and set our targets,” said Ezekiel Okeyo, Principal of St. Kizito Nyansiongo Boys High School. I’d want to thank all of the stakeholders, including the board of directors, sponsors, teachers, and students, for helping us achieve our goals.“
"I want to thank the teachers who worked really hard, since without their hard work and assistance, we would not have posted this mean,” said Kebabe Girls Secondary School Principal Beatrice Bironga.
12. Kuura Secondary School
Kuura Secondary School also saw a significant increase in its mean score in the most recent exam, rising from 5.37 in 2021 to 9.11 in 2022.

14. St. Paul’s Gekano Boys’ High School (9.951),
15. Nyansiongo Boys’ High School (9.0),
16. Nyabururu Girls’ High School (8.631),
17. St. Edward Nyabioto Secondary School (8.110),
18. Nyabisase Mixed Secondary School (8.025),
19. Rigena High School (8.266), and
20. Riokindo Boys’ High School (8.266) also received high schools (7.830).
With principals stating that the results are the consequence of their pure hard work and dedication, the greater Gusii region is projected to remain in the spotlight for the 2022 performance.
Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu affirmed that there were no examination irregularities when he released the 2022 KCSE results.
