Fifteen Kenyan students who were sponsored by the Nandi County government to pursue their bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in Nursing and Medicine in Finland are appealing for help.

They claim their sponsor has failed to pay their tuition fees, resulting in arrears of around Ksh.13.5 million (£90,000).

Financial struggles

The students have been unable to attend classes at the Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology LUT since December 1, 2022, due to their outstanding fees.

According to Raabia Hussain, one of the students, the Nandi government did not pay their fees in accordance with the terms of the scholarship. The students were also required to pay part of the expenses, including airfare.

“Unfortunately, the Nandi government did not pay in accordance with the terms of the scholarship,” he said.

Students in distress

Hussain further stated that the students are currently stranded in the streets without a place to call home.

The situation has resulted in emotional and psychological distress among the students.

“If you will not meet all the requirements needed to facilitate the students, why commit to sending them abroad?” Hassain posed.

Disappointment with sponsor

The students are disappointed that their sponsor failed to honor their agreement and meet all the necessary requirements to facilitate their education in Finland.

They are calling on the government of Nandi County to step in and address the situation.
