14,733 Delocolized Teachers Apply For Transfers as MPs Deadline to TSC Nears.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has reported that 14,733 teachers have requested transfers to remote areas.
This is a result of the commission’s suspension of the delocalization policy, which had placed rural teachers in urban schools.
These teachers have requested reassignment to their home regions.
“As a commission, we will consider all the issues of teachers in terms of delocalization and ensure we take care of their requests as well as the constitutional mandate of the commission to ensure the schools have teachers,” Muturi said.
According to him, the majority of teachers desire to be moved owing to bad health, familial ties, and advanced age.
The Teachers Service Commission has until January 15 to approve all teacher transfers, as stipulated by members of Parliament.
The return of delocalized teachers to their home regions was mandated by the legislature.
On January 15, the head of the Education committee, Julius Melly, stated that the committee will require transfer data.
“By January 31, any teacher who is asking to reverse delocalization should have been sorted, “ Melly said.
Vice-chairman Malulu Injendi questioned why TSC chairman Jamleck Muturi was uninformed that delocalization had been abandoned.
“I think at this point we now need to work with timelines. We give this commission upto January to finalise all the 14,000 cases,” Injendi said.
The legal counsel for the TSC requested that transfers be made on a case-by-case basis, but the MPs denied the proposal.
“You will be recruiting more than 30,000 teachers so you have no excuse for that,” Melly said.
The TSC’s chief executive officer, Nancy Macharia, reiterated last week that teachers who requested transfers back to their hometowns will not be compelled to find swaps
The TSC’s chief executive officer, Nancy Macharia, reiterated last week that teachers who requested transfers back to their hometowns will not be compelled to find swaps.
Last week, some lawmakers expressed worry that some applicants were asked to find swaps.
“Kindly clarify why some teachers have been asked to look for another teacher to replace them when they leave,” Injendi said.
Macharia stated that finding a replacement is the responsibility of the commission.
“No teacher will be asked to find their swap. It is up to us TSC to find who will replace them,” Macharia told MPs.
Nonetheless, if a replacement cannot be identified, TSC will locate an other exit.
“We will keep the teachers’ details in our data bank until we find a replacement for them,” Macharia said.
“But, school principals and deputy principals will have to wait longer for the TSC to approve their transfers.”
