The training of Grade Nine teachers for the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) will begin in January of next year, according to Education CS George Magoha.

Magoha expressed confidence that the CBC will not be scrapped by the next government.

He stated that teachers for grades 7 and 8 have been trained and that the construction of the 11,600 new classrooms for junior secondary students is 90% complete.

He spoke yesterday at Moi Girls High School in Eldoret during a junior secondary school inspection.

The Grade Nine training is targeting 116,024 secondary school teachers.

60,000 teachers were trained in the last term. Prof Magoha stated that more teachers will be trained in this and the following terms.

The training targeted teachers of languages, pure sciences, applied sciences, mathematics, humanities, and technical subjects.

According to the CS, teachers have been trained to implement CBC, and the remaining task will be completed by the next government after more than 10 million children have enrolled in the curriculum.

According to the Teachers Service Commission chief executive officer Nancy Macharia, schools are short of more than 100,000 teachers.

She claimed that the shortage is the result of government underfunding.

In January, the first junior secondary school class will be admitted.
