Kisii county has hired more than 1,000 ECDE teachers on permanent and pensionable contracts.
This will result in a significant increase in the salaries of the 1,000 teachers employed in 2014.
Degree holders will now earn Sh39,770, up from Sh14,000, while diploma and certificate holders will earn Sh31,730 and Sh23,090, respectively.
Governor James Ongwae told teachers at the Kisii Agriculture Training Centre that he was glad his administration was able to push the changes through.

“My government, through the department of Education and Manpower Development, has domesticated the Council of Governors (CoG) Scheme of Service with the current county scheme of service guidelines,“ Ongwae said.
"I am happy that these teachers will enjoy better terms, get pension benefits, and access bank loans among other remunerations.”
Ongwae noted that he was the country’s first governor to hire ECDE teachers and that he was pleased to leave them on better terms as he retired.
Caroline Nyanchoka, a teacher at Entanda Primary School in Tabaka ward’s South Mugirango constituency, couldn’t hide her delight as she recounted her experience.
“I was employed by parents in one of the schools in South Mugirango where I used to get Sh500 from the parents,“ she said.
"Sometimes I will go for months without any payment owing to the level of poverty in the village.”
Nyanchoka now has a Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood Education and is one of 83 people whose pay has increased.
