10 University’s VCs, DVCs, Face Massive Shake-Up in Major Administrative Changes
The Kenyan government has taken steps to replace Vice Chancellors (VCs) and Deputy Vice Chancellors (DVCs) across ten public universities in a bid to revamp the higher education sector.
The Public Service Commission (PSC) posted an advertisement in local newspapers on February 28th, calling for applications for the vacant positions.
The universities affected include Pwani University, Kisii University, Karatina University, University of Eldoret, Machakos University, South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU), Tom Mboya University, University of Kabianga, and Alupe University.
The application deadline for all vacancies is March 20th, 2023, by 5 p.m. The Universities Act stipulates that the council must appoint the VC and DVC through a competitive process conducted by PSC, in consultation with the Cabinet Secretary.
According to the Act, the VC is the university’s chief executive and the academic and administrative head. The VC is responsible for directing, organizing, administering, and developing the university’s programs.
The holder of the position also has duties and responsibilities outlined in the Charter.
To apply for the positions, candidates can log on to the PSC website and click on the job advertisement posting.
They can then create an account by providing their personal details and academic credentials. After creating an account, they can follow the procedure listed on the website.
The positions advertised per university vary, with some universities seeking to fill multiple positions.
For example, Pwani University is seeking to fill the positions of VC, DVC Academic and Student Affairs, and DVC Research and Extension. On the other hand, Tom Mboya University is only seeking to fill the position of DVC Academic, Research and Students Affairs.
The government’s decision to replace VCs and DVCs across multiple universities simultaneously is an unprecedented move. It remains to be seen how the new appointments will affect the universities and the higher education sector as a whole.
